November 2006 - Denied a Voice – Inaugural Event for the International Day of the Imprisoned Writer

This Day was dedicated to the Russian writer, Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered on October 7. Special speaker, Human Rights & Equal Opportunities Commissioner Tom Calma raised vital issues such as censorship, freedom of speech and the importance of balancing rights for writers (read speech [PDF, 70K]). Minister John Hill commended the formation of Adelaide PEN.

May 2006 - Writing Dangerously
Chaired by Lindy Warrell, the Writing Dangerously forum heard a variety of views about what it means to write dangerously, personally and politically. Speakers included Adelaide PEN’s Founding Advisor, Nicholas Jose who talked about the importance of PEN and what drew him to it as well as Juan Garrido-Salgado, Stephanie Luke and Sonja Dechian.



March 2006 - Adelaide Festival of Arts Writers’ Week
Adelaide PEN formed in February 2006. PEN placed a large advertisement in the Writers’ Week progam, featuring an empty chair which is a powerful symbol for imprisoned writers. The image used – Chair in My Prison – was designed by Lurdes Borralhois using a photograph by Tulay Palaz.
