There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because it's right.

Subcommittees

Letter-writing subcommittee

Convened by Tony Brooks
With Patrick Allington, Miriel Lenore, and Gay Lynch.

Letter writing to advocate for persecuted and imprisoned is the core business of International PEN. Working within the guidelines of the Writers in Prison Committee of the International PEN Rapid Action Network (RAN) program, members of this subcommittee contribute four letters per month to government officials around the world, campaigning to end custodial and non-custodial forms of oppression of writers.

Over the years, many writers have been released from prison, largely due to the international pressure brought about by PEN and other such organizations.

Adelaide PEN largely confines itself to countries in our region but occasionally contributes wider afield.

Fundraising subcommittee

Convened by Heather Taylor-Johnson
With Jude Aquilina, Rachel Hennessy, Jo Dey and Anna Solding.

This subcommittee is vital to the viability of Adelaide PEN. Funds raised enable Adelaide PEN to print posters and leaflets for its activities, post international mail to foreign governments, send greeting cards in December to imprisoned writers and their families, buy books of imprisoned writers' works to read at events, and hold events such as 'Denied a voice'.

Projects include:
The installation of a ‘Donate a Book for Sale’ box at the front door of the SA Writers’ Centre.
A yearly creative non-fiction writing competition.
